Western Sanctions Unity Is Cracking And Nord Stream Is Back In The Conversation

Western sanctions Russia

Western sanctions on Russia were once presented as a united front, but that unity appears to be weakening. According to a report in the Berliner Zeitung, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are discussing the resumption of the Nord Stream pipeline, but this time under American control.

While there has been no official confirmation, reports suggest Washington could be trying to bring back Russian gas to Europe, reversing a policy that had aimed to cripple Russia economically due to the war in Ukraine.

How Western Sanctions Russia Tensions And Nord Stream Rumors Are Rising

Ever since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Western sanctions have targeted Russian banks, technology imports, and oil revenues. The US and EU Russia sanctions have largely been in sync so far, but that now seems to be changing.

The Nord Stream rumors claiming backchannel discussions between Washington and Moscow have caught everyone by surprise. Recently, the EU also failed at securing support from the US and other G7 countries to block Russian oil shipments. Shedding light on the proposal, a diplomat said,

“The EU presented to the US and G7 its plan to fully prohibit European businesses from transporting Russian oil and providing any kind of maintenance, supply, financing and insurance services to tankers that transport Russian oil, no matter what flag they are flying. The European Commission invited partners to impose similar restrictions on their companies. The United States refused.”

For many leaders, the resumption of the Nord Stream pipeline marks a clear US EU split. Apart from that, some favor it, citing the increased energy costs. Before the sabotage, Nord Stream provided inexpensive Russian pipeline gas to Germany. Even the company operating it, Nord Stream 2 AG, laid off employees and faced an existential crisis after the attack.

The timing of the renewed speculation around the Nord Stream pipeline is also significant. The EU is struggling to get full US backing for stronger sanctions against Russia, and with reports of the resumption of the pipeline under US control, it adds another layer of complexity.

Whether Nord Stream remains only a rumor or becomes part of serious negotiations remains to be seen, but policy disagreements and energy concerns continue to shape the broader Russia energy geopolitics.
