BYD overtakes Tesla in more than 20 countries and regions over the past five years, reshaping the global EV market as the Chinese automaker pushes exports to offset a sharp China EV slowdown at home. BYD global EV expansion has flipped the map from 2020 to 2025, with BYD now leading in markets across Southeast Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

But right now, a BYD sales slump at home is undermining BYD Tesla market share gains abroad, with domestic NEV deliveries falling below 100,000 units in February 2026 for the first time since 2023.

How BYD Overtakes Tesla Market by Market

BYD’s average passenger vehicle price sits at around $19,000, well below Tesla’s entry level. The company produces batteries and core components in-house, giving it a cost edge competitors struggle to match. BYD Tesla market share data from Nikkei research using S&P Global Mobility shows the shift has been dramatic, with BYD overtakes Tesla in countries like Thailand, Brazil, and parts of Europe between 2020 and 2025.

Wang Chuanfu stated:

“Toyota Motor and Volkswagen are a little slow in electrifying their vehicles, but once they make a leap, the impact will be huge. BYD absolutely has to be faster.”

The China EV Slowdown Threatening BYD’s Base

BYD global EV expansion is being pushed harder partly because the China EV slowdown is squeezing domestic volumes. BYD’s production capacity is roughly 4 million vehicles annually, which makes February’s sub-100,000 domestic figure even harder to explain away as a seasonal issue.

Early 2026 BYD sales slump figures are raising serious concerns. Exports to Brazil, Europe, and Southeast Asia are being ramped up, but trade friction in the U.S. and EU is complicating that pivot fast.
