Alphabet is seeking to raise between $20 billion and $25 billion through a multi-tranche US bond offering with maturities ranging from two to 40 years. According to reports, the offering attracted approximately $115 billion in investor orders. This makes it the second-largest demand ever recorded for a corporate bond sale of its kind.

The Alphabet bond sale comes weeks after the company increased its 2026 capital expenditure guidance for a second time this year. This is mostly to fund expanding Google AI infrastructure. The company also reported its first negative free cash flow in its latest quarterly results. It points to the sheer scale of investment required to compete in the AI race.

Alphabet stock closed at $356.62, down 2.39% on Thursday. Investor appetite for its debt suggests institutions remain comfortable financing the company’s long-term AI ambitions despite near-term profitability concerns.

US AI Investment Becomes a Larger Driver of the US Economy

Alphabet’s fundraising coincides with a boost in AI spending across the US economy. Data from the US Commerce Department showed private investment in AI-related industries climbed roughly 25% year over year in the second quarter of 2026. It reached a record annualized pace of around $1.5 trillion.

Investment was led by computers and peripheral equipment, followed by communication equipment, software, and data centers. Over the past two years, AI-related private investment has increased by nearly $500 billion, with analysts estimating that direct AI spending now contributes 25% to 33% of recent US GDP growth.

The trend goes beyond Alphabet. According to reports, major technology companies, including Amazon, Meta, Oracle, and Alphabet, issued approximately $194 billion in bonds through early July 2026. It is nearly 79% higher than the same period a year earlier. The wave of borrowing shows an industry increasingly willing to finance massive AI infrastructure projects through debt rather than relying solely on existing cash reserves.
