The Nvidia Open AI deal may become one of the largest AI infrastructure investments announced to date. Under this deal, Nvidia is reportedly in talks to provide a $250B financing backstop for OpenAI’s planned Ohio data center. The project could ultimately cost more than $500B. It could set a new standard for AI data center funding.

The proposed deal may help the company secure lower borrowing costs despite lacking an investment grade credit rating. Other than that, Nvidia is also discussing financing for up to $350B in Nvidia chip purchases. This reinforces its role in Nvidia AI financing dynamics. It also paves the way for the next standard in AI infrastructure investment.

The OpenAI Ohio data center is being developed by SB Energy, a subsidiary of Japan’s SoftBank Group. The data center is expected to deploy 800 megawatts of power capacity in its first phase by 2028. It will then expand further to around 10 gigawatts of power capacity.

Reports indicate that SoftBank is leading the development, while Nvidia is expected to provide a financing backstop for the project. The US government is expected to maintain oversight over power allocation due to the project’s strategic importance. This shows how the US wants to keep the project under close supervision.

In addition to this, Microsoft, Google, and Anthropic have also expressed interest in securing capacity at the OpenAI Ohio data center. This highlights the growing demand for AI infrastructure investment.

Nvidia’s Financing Plan Highlights the AI Infrastructure Race

The reported Nvidia OpenAI deal has sparked fresh discussions across the board. These debates center around rising AI data center funding. Investor Michael Burry and Ed Zitron have questioned the financing structure.

“This is such an insane thing to do on so many levels, and it is about as bearish as it gets, especially considering this is being built BY SOFTBANK! Also, where’s the money going to come from? Very silly stuff all round.”

Supporters, however, view this deal as a landmark AI infrastructure investment, with Nvidia AI financing taking center stage. Companies are entering a race to secure AI computing capacity. Many firms are exploring AI data center funding as a way to expand their AI ambitions.

If this Nvidia Open AI deal materializes and the Ohio AI data center is built, it would reinforce Nvidia’s expanding role in Nvidia AI financing. It would move the company beyond manufacturing AI chips to helping finance the infrastructure powering the next generation of artificial intelligence.
